☛ Kalachakra Mandala: Introduction
In Tibetan, the word for mandala is “kilkhor,” meaning “center of the circle with exterior walls and surrounding environment.” Mandalas are sacred representations of the cosmos and spiritual realms, often created using precious jewels, flowers, dyed rice, colored stones, or intricately colored sand.
Traditionally, sand mandalas—made from finely crushed precious stones—are considered the most spiritually potent due to the precious materials used and the extraordinary skill required for their creation. Each grain of sand is charged with spiritual blessings during the ritual process, allowing the completed mandala to embody a vast reservoir of sacred energy.
☛ Introduction to Thangka
A thangka (also spelled tangka, thanka, or tanka) is a vibrant and intricate form of Tibetan Buddhist painting that vividly portrays spiritual teachings. Meticulously crafted on cotton canvas or silk appliqué, thangkas depict Buddhist deities, sacred mandalas, narrative stories, and cosmic diagrams.
Traditionally unframed and rolled like ancient scrolls, thangkas are mounted on textile backings and often shielded with silk covers to protect their delicate artistry. To ensure their preservation and vibrant appearance over time, they should be stored in dry, stable environments.
