Aparimita: The Buddha of Infinite Life

Aparimita, also known as Amitayus or Chepame, is a revered embodiment of the Buddha associated with infinite life and longevity. He is particularly venerated for his power to bestow long life upon devotees and is often invoked in rituals focused on health, vitality, and spiritual endurance.

Traditionally depicted in a rich red hue, Aparimita sits in meditative posture (dhyana mudra), holding a vase of ambrosia—symbolizing the nectar of immortality. As a Sambhogakaya Buddha, he is adorned with elaborate ornaments and regal attire. His serene expression and symbolic elements, including the crown, ushnisha (cranial protuberance), and urnakosh (tuft of hair between the eyebrows), emphasize his enlightened qualities. Unlike many deities, Aparimita is always portrayed alone, signifying his solitary dedication to the path of immortality and wisdom.

Full Fire Gold Plating

This statue of Aparimita is completed using traditional fire gold plating, also known as mercury gold plating. This time-honored Nepali technique applies a genuine layer of gold onto the copper surface through a meticulous process involving heat and mercury amalgam.

Though more costly than modern electroplating, fire gold plating produces a finish that is not only visually radiant but also highly durable. Its resurgence in Nepal speaks to a renewed respect for authentic craftsmanship and spiritual significance. This technique reflects centuries of artistic heritage and enhances the visual sanctity of the statue.

Gold Painted Face

To accentuate its most expressive features, the face of Aparimita is hand-painted with gold. The eyes and lips, in particular, are meticulously detailed to evoke a sense of compassion and presence—qualities vital to Buddhist devotional art.

Beyond aesthetics, this act holds deep ritual importance. Gold face painting symbolizes the spiritual “awakening” of the statue, making it suitable for consecration, meditation, and worship. The artisan’s devotion is evident in the precision and care, ensuring the statue embodies the sacred essence of Aparimita.

Lost-Wax Casting Method

This statue is created using the lost-wax casting technique, a method known for its fine detail and historical depth. The process involves:

  • Sculpting a wax model with exact detailing

  • Applying multiple layers of ceramic to form a mold

  • Heating the mold to melt and remove the wax

  • Pouring molten copper into the hollow cavity

  • Breaking the ceramic shell to reveal the final sculpture

This ancient technique, practiced for thousands of years, allows for intricate, one-of-a-kind creations, making each statue a unique work of art.
