Padmasambhava – The Lotus-Born Master
Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche, is revered as the second Buddha in Tibetan Buddhism. His name means “The Lotus-Born,” symbolizing his miraculous birth on a lotus flower and his enlightened nature from the very beginning.
A powerful spiritual master, Padmasambhava introduced Vajrayana Buddhism to Tibet, Bhutan, and neighboring regions during the 8th century. He is considered a realized yogi, scholar, and magician, whose teachings transcend time and form the heart of the Nyingma tradition.
He once proclaimed:
“My father is the intrinsic awareness, Samantabhadra. My mother is the ultimate sphere of reality, Samantabhadri. I act in the way of the Buddhas of the three times.”
This statue honors his profound spiritual presence and serves as a powerful focal point for meditation, devotion, and spiritual protection.
Gold-Painted Face – Sacred Detailing
The face of Guru Rinpoche is carefully hand-painted in gold, highlighting:
-
The eyes and lips, giving expression and presence
-
A central ritual in Buddhist consecration practices
-
A reflection of devotion and precision by the artisan
This gold-painted face imbues the statue with a lifelike and compassionate energy, inviting a deeper spiritual connection.
Partly Gold-Plated – Fire-Gilded Accents
This statue features a partly fire-gilded finish, a traditional Nepali technique:
-
Selectively applied gold highlights the divine form, while robes remain oxidized or painted
-
Gold is applied through heat and pressure, adhering only to exposed surfaces
-
Emphasizes the contrast between the purity of the body and the humility of attire
The interplay between gold and color enhances both aesthetic appeal and symbolic depth, making this statue both spiritually meaningful and visually captivating.
Lost-Wax Casting – Traditional Nepali Artistry
Crafted through the ancient lost-wax (cire-perdue) technique, each statue is a one-of-a-kind creation:
-
A detailed wax model is first sculpted
-
It is encased in a ceramic mold
-
The wax is melted and removed
-
Molten copper is poured into the cavity
-
After cooling, the ceramic shell is broken away
This method allows for incredible detail and accuracy, preserving the spiritual form and character of Guru Rinpoche in lasting copper.
