Kalachakra Mandala: Introduction
The Kalachakra Mandala, meaning “Wheel of Time”, is a sacred representation of universal harmony, wisdom, and enlightenment in Tibetan Buddhism. The Tibetan term for mandala, “kilkhor”, translates to “center of the circle with exterior walls and the surrounding environment.”
Mandalas can be made from precious jewels, flowers, dyed rice, colored stones, or sand. Among these, sand mandalas are considered the most sacred due to the ritual precision and spiritual blessings involved. Each grain of sand is charged with positive energy, making the entire mandala a powerful tool for meditation and transformation.
Introduction to Thangka
A thangka (also spelled tangka, thanka, or tanka) is a traditional Tibetan Buddhist painting, intricately hand-painted on cotton canvas using natural mineral colors. These sacred artworks depict Buddhist deities, mandalas, and religious symbols, serving as guides for meditation and spiritual practice.
Thangkas are unique in that they are unframed and designed to be rolled for storage, resembling ancient scrolls. They are traditionally mounted on silk brocade backings with a protective silk cover. To ensure their longevity, proper storage in a dry environment is essential.
