About Vajrasattva

Vajrasattva is revered in the Vajrayana tradition and is considered an Adi-Buddha by Nepalese Bajracharyas, as described in the Vajrasattva Kaya text. His luminous white body symbolizes purity and wisdom. He holds a five-pronged vajra in his right hand at his heart and a silver bell in his left hand at his side. Adorned with jewel ornaments and silken robes, he sits in Vajraparyanka posture, radiating boundless clarity like the moon’s reflection in water.

In his father-mother (Yab-Yum) aspect, Vajrasattva embraces his consort, Shakti, in a sacred union. This form is typically revealed only to initiates of the Highest Yoga Tantra. While Vajrasattva retains his signature attributes, his consort holds a kartika (ritual flaying knife) in her right hand and a kapala (skull cup) in her left hand.

About Shakti (Yab-Yum Union)

Shakti, in the yab-yum (father-mother) posture, represents the primordial fusion of wisdom (prajña) and compassion (karuṇā). This sacred embrace symbolizes the interdependence of insight and skillful means, much like Indra’s net in Buddhist philosophy. Traditionally, the female consort sits on the male’s lap, representing unity, balance, and ultimate enlightenment. In rare depictions, this positioning is reversed, known as yum-yab.

Craftsmanship – Ceramic Mold Casting

This Vajrasattva statue is meticulously crafted using the ceramic mold casting process, a modern alternative to traditional lost-wax or rubber molding techniques.

The process involves:

  1. Sculpting a highly detailed wax model of the statue.
  2. Coating the model in multiple ceramic layers, forming a durable mold.
  3. Firing the mold in a kiln, causing the wax to melt and leave behind a perfect cavity.
  4. Pouring molten copper or brass into the cavity to form the sculpture.
  5. Breaking away the ceramic mold after cooling to reveal the final masterpiece.

This method ensures exceptional detail and precision, capturing the intricacy of Vajrasattva and his consort with remarkable clarity.
