About Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara)
Chenrezig, also known as Avalokiteshvara, is one of the most widely revered bodhisattvas in Mahayana Buddhism. As the embodiment of compassion, he has attained complete enlightenment yet chooses to remain in the earthly realm to assist all sentient beings in attaining liberation. His presence signifies boundless mercy and the deep desire to alleviate suffering.
In Mahayana Buddhism, compassion is elevated alongside wisdom as a foundational pillar of the path to enlightenment. Chenrezig represents this ideal through his eternal commitment to serve humanity, making his image a profound symbol of love, empathy, and spiritual responsibility.
Finishing: Stone Setting
This statue is intricately adorned with semi-precious stones including turquoise, coral, and lapis lazuli. These stones are carefully selected and hand-set with precision, adding elegance and depth to the sculpture. The vibrant hues of the stones stand out beautifully against the golden surface, enhancing both its aesthetic and spiritual appeal.
Gold Painted Face
The face of Chenrezig is hand-painted with pure gold to highlight essential features—especially the eyes and lips—that convey compassion and serenity. This process is not only artistic but also ritualistic, considered a sacred act in Buddhist practice. It imbues the statue with life-like presence and spiritual vitality, making it suitable for meditation, devotion, or ceremonial use.
Traditional Full Fire Gold Plating
This piece is crafted using traditional fire gold plating, also known as mercury gold plating—a rare and authentic method still practiced in Nepal. Unlike modern electroplating, this technique involves bonding real gold to the statue through heat application, creating a more durable, rich, and authentic finish. Appreciated for its historical value and superior quality, this method ensures the statue maintains its brilliance over time.
Crafted with the Lost-Wax Casting Method
The statue is made using the ancient lost-wax casting technique, known for its precision and fine detailing. This time-honored process begins with a wax model, which is encased in ceramic, then melted away to leave a mold into which molten copper is poured. Once cooled, the ceramic shell is removed, revealing the finished sculpture. The result is a work of art that reflects meticulous craftsmanship, passed down through generations of Nepali artisans.
This Chenrezig statue is more than just a decorative piece — it is a spiritual symbol, a cultural artifact, and a testament to centuries of devotion and artistry.
