Aparimita (Amitayus) – The Buddha of Infinite Life

Aparimita, also known as Amitayus or Chepame in Tibetan, is a revered figure in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism, especially known for bestowing longevity, merit, and wisdom. Often depicted in radiant red, Amitayus sits in serene meditation posture (Dhyana Mudra), holding a vase of ambrosia, symbolizing the nectar of immortality.
He wears the ornate robes and jewelry of a Sambhogakaya Buddha, signifying his exalted, blissful nature. Unlike other deities, Amitayus is never portrayed with a consort, emphasizing his self-contained spiritual power. Adorned with a crown, ushnisha (crown protuberance), and urnakosh (tuft between the brows), he radiates tranquility, compassion, and the promise of a long, meaningful life. This thangka serves as a powerful aid in longevity practices, meditation, and visualizations.

What is a Thangka?

A thangka (also spelled tangka, thanka, or tanka) is a traditional Tibetan Buddhist painting, crafted on cotton canvas or silk using fine mineral pigments. These intricate artworks depict deities, mandalas, or sacred teachings and are used in ritual, meditation, and teaching. Traditionally unframed and scroll-like in form, thangkas are mounted on textile brocade and often protected by a silk veil.
Thangkas are both artistic masterpieces and spiritual tools, connecting practitioners to the divine through imagery and symbolism. Proper storage in dry, stable environments preserves their vivid color and sacred detail for generations.
