The Life of Buddha – A Visual Journey
This exquisite thangka portrays the life of Gautama Buddha, the historical founder of Buddhism, who lived between 563 and 483 BCE in the Indo-Nepalese region. Before attaining enlightenment, Buddha underwent countless rebirths as a bodhisattva, perfecting the virtues necessary for his final incarnation.
Born as Prince Siddhartha, the son of King Śuddhodana of the Shakya clan, he grew up in Kapilavastu, near present-day Nepal. His birthplace, Lumbini, is celebrated as a sacred site. Renouncing royal life in pursuit of truth, Siddhartha undertook a spiritual journey that led him to enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, becoming the Buddha, or “Awakened One.”
This narrative thangka captures key moments from his life—birth, renunciation, enlightenment, teachings, and parinirvana—offering deep spiritual insight and inspiration to practitioners and admirers alike.
What is a Thangka?
A thangka (also spelled tangka, thanka, or tanka) is a traditional Tibetan Buddhist scroll painting, revered for its spiritual depth and fine craftsmanship. Hand-painted on cotton or silk with mineral-based colors, thangkas depict a variety of sacred subjects including deities, mandalas, and spiritual narratives. These artworks are mounted on textile brocade, often adorned with a silk veil, and stored rolled like ancient scrolls.
Used in meditation, ritual, and study, thangkas serve as powerful visual tools that preserve and convey Buddhist teachings. To protect their intricate beauty, they should be stored in dry, stable conditions away from moisture and direct sunlight.
