Pancha Buddha – The Five Wisdom Tathagatas
The Pancha Buddhas, or Five Dhyani Buddhas, represent five distinct qualities and aspects of the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni. Highly revered in Vajrayana Buddhism, they embody enlightened wisdom and are commonly featured in sacred art, statues, and thangkas. Known as the Five Conquerors in Sanskrit, these Buddhas include Vairochana (center), Akshobhya (east), Ratnasambhava (south), Amitabha (west), and Amoghasiddhi (north).
Each Buddha presides over a direction and a celestial realm, symbolizing specific virtues such as wisdom, fearlessness, compassion, and the transformation of delusion into clarity. In both Nepalese and Tibetan Buddhist traditions, the presence of all five is essential—collections of statues or paintings are considered incomplete without them. This stunning thangka visually unites their energies in a mandala, serving as a powerful tool for meditation, visualization, and spiritual awakening.
What is a Thangka?
A thangka (also spelled tangka, thanka, or tanka) is a traditional Tibetan Buddhist scroll painting created with meticulous care on cotton or silk using mineral pigments. Thangkas are spiritual tools, portraying deities, mandalas, and narratives from Buddhist teachings. They are typically mounted on brocade fabric with a silk cover and stored rolled up to protect their delicate form.
Used for meditation, rituals, and teachings, thangkas are treasured for their ability to transmit sacred knowledge visually. Proper care in dry and stable conditions is essential to preserve their vibrant colors and intricate details.
