Akash Yogini: The Sky-Dancing Wisdom Goddess

Akash Yogini, also known as Vidyadhari or Bijeshwori Devi, embodies the sky-dancing form of Vajrayogini in the Newar Buddhist tradition. Her name, derived from the Sanskrit word akasha (meaning space or sky), reflects her association with boundless wisdom and spiritual liberation.

She is venerated at the Bijeshwori Temple in Kathmandu, located above the western bank of the Bishnumati River. The temple is closely associated with the Indian Mahasiddha Maitripa, who is believed to have attained realization of Akash Yogini at this sacred site. Because of this, she is also referred to as Maitri-dakini or Maitri-khechari, meaning the sky-going wisdom goddess of Maitripa’s lineage.

Akash Yogini represents the transformation of the mind into its pure, spacious nature. She symbolizes transcendence, spiritual awakening, and the realization of emptiness.

Chocolate Oxidized Patina

The statue has been finished with a chocolate-colored antique patina, designed to emulate the appearance of an aged copper sculpture. Unlike surface paint, this oxidation process is carefully applied to interact with the metal itself, producing a deep, enduring finish.

The result is a refined and vintage look that adds visual richness and historical character, while also serving as a protective layer against natural wear and corrosion. This aged finish makes the statue appear as if it has gracefully weathered over a century, offering both aesthetic value and durability.

Ceramic Mold Casting Process

This Akash Yogini statue was created using the ceramic mold casting method, a refined approach derived from traditional lost-wax casting. This modern technique allows artisans to achieve detailed and precise results, especially important for intricate tantric figures.

The process includes the following steps:

  • A detailed wax model is sculpted by hand

  • The model is coated in multiple layers of ceramic material to form a mold

  • The mold is fired, allowing the wax to melt and leave a hollow cavity

  • Molten copper is poured into the mold to take the final form

  • Once cooled, the ceramic shell is broken away to reveal the finished piece

This method ensures accuracy, fine detail, and a clean, well-defined finish, while maintaining the artistic quality of traditional metalwork.
