Vajrapani: A Symbol of Power and Protection
Vajrapaṇi is one of the earliest and most revered bodhisattvas in Mahayana Buddhism, embodying the Buddha’s power and serving as his protector and guide. Alongside Manjusri (wisdom) and Avalokitesvara (compassion), Vajrapani completes the triad of deities symbolizing the Buddha’s virtues.
Vajrapani is also one of the earliest Dharmapalas (protectors of the Dharma) and holds a unique place in Buddhist traditions, including Tibetan Buddhism, Zen Buddhism of the Shaolin Temple, and Pure Land Buddhism, where he is known as Mahasthamaprapta. Depictions of Vajrapani can be found in many Buddhist temples across Japan, where he is revered as a Dharma protector called Nio.
