Shakyamuni Buddha: The Awakened One

The term Buddha originates from the ancient Sanskrit word meaning “awakened” or “supreme awareness,” closely associated with Bodhi, or enlightenment. Shakyamuni Buddha, also known as Gautama Buddha, was born around 563 BCE in Lumbini, present-day Nepal. His teachings laid the foundation for Buddhism and emphasized insight into the nature of suffering, the root of desire, and the path to inner peace.

Gautama’s teachings contrast strongly with materialistic values, focusing instead on introspection, mindfulness, and compassion. His philosophy encourages individuals to rise above greed, ego, and ignorance—qualities he saw as barriers to enlightenment and causes of suffering for all beings, especially the vulnerable and impoverished.

Full Fire Gold Plating

This statue of Shakyamuni Buddha has been finished with traditional fire gold plating, also referred to as mercury gold plating. This time-honored technique, used by Nepali artisans for centuries, involves applying a genuine layer of gold to the statue through a controlled heating process.

Fire gold plating is significantly more durable and luminous than modern electroplating methods. The result is a radiant finish that reflects the reverence and sanctity of the figure it adorns. Increasingly favored for its authenticity and beauty, this method highlights the exceptional craftsmanship and cultural legacy of Nepalese artistry.

Gold Painted Face

To bring out the serene and compassionate expression of the Buddha, the statue’s face has been hand-painted with gold. This sacred process enhances fine features such as the eyes and lips, which are essential to conveying the peaceful presence of Shakyamuni.

Beyond its aesthetic value, gold face painting is a deeply symbolic ritual in Buddhist practice. It signifies the “opening” of the statue—bringing it to life as an object of devotion and spiritual presence. The detailed work reflects the artisan’s intention to honor the enlightened nature of the Buddha and prepare the statue for ceremonial use or private meditation.

Lost-Wax Casting Method

This statue is crafted using the lost-wax casting technique, a sophisticated and ancient method of metal sculpture that ensures high precision and intricate detailing. The process involves:

  • Sculpting a detailed wax model

  • Coating the model in multiple layers of ceramic material to form a mold

  • Melting and draining the wax from the mold

  • Pouring molten copper into the cavity

  • Breaking away the ceramic shell to reveal the final sculpture

This technique, practiced for millennia, allows artisans to reproduce lifelike detail and results in a truly unique and durable work of sacred art.
